Do you remember the thrill of "Field Trip Day" at school? I do, so it was really fun to relive those memories as Todd prepared for his 5th Grade trip to Craters of the Moon National Monument. I was going to accompany him, but Brad managed to get the day off so they could spend the day together. Talk about a great dad!!! Todd was so excited to have him along. They had a great day together. Todd came home brimming with happiness today because he was recommended by his teacher to join K-Club, a service organization for 4th and 5th graders sponsored by the Kiwanis Club. He will be helping with Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF and Project Rudolph along with a few other community service projects. He gets to stay after school on Fridays for an extra 2 hours. He was thrilled. Yea Toddy!!!
Today I had the opportunity to visit with both Kate's and Todd's teacher. They both had great things to say about the kids. They're doing very well.
Todd has had a bit of a rude awakening because 4th grade is a lot different than 3rd grade. His teacher is especially tough, and really expects a lot out of him. He is learning to be more organized, disciplined, careful, and attentive: all important skills for the future.
Kate is thrilled because she has been accepted into the Discovery (Gifted and Talented) Program. She will attend with the 2nd graders once a week for two hours. She's looking very forward to participating in some of the fun activities she's seen Todd enjoying the last couple of years. We're very proud of her for working so hard. She's becoming a great little reader, and starting to play the piano with more confidence as well. At six years old, she's doing great!!!
I realized that I didn't post pictures of the kids with their new teachers with the other school posting. Below is Kate with her wonderful teacher, Mrs. Berg. She just loves her and loves going to school!
Todd is standing with his teacher, Ms. Muecke. He really likes her as well. Apparently she has a bit of a reputation amongst the students for being mean, but the first day of school he came home and exclaimed, "Mom, Ms. Muecke's not mean, she just means what she says!" I thought that was some pretty astute thinking. :)
I think we are the last family to start school this year, which seems weird, because I still feel like it's so early to be starting. I guess I just didn't get enough summer!!! Last week I was absolutely sure I wasn't ready for it, but I'm quickly warming to the idea. The kids were equally unenthusiastic, but were up bright and early this morning and ready to go to the bus stop about a 1/2 hour early! I think they're adjusting just fine. They got Jack ready to go and even equipped him with his own little backpack. Cute stuff.
Schedules are good, schedules are good, schedules are good, .... (do I sound like I'm trying to convince myself?)

Jack was devastated when the bus left without him. :( Thankfully, after about 30 seconds of crying he dried his tears (with some effort), put on his best big boy smile and said, "We go car, Mama?" Yep, we go car, buddy!
